I would have preferred a check that I can just go deposit at an ATM.If you go to the Senate Finance Committee website, there is a FAQ on these cards. It says that they're issuing the cards because the Treasury can't print checks fast enough.
But if capacity is the issue, then why only 4M out of 150M taxpayers? And why go with one small time regional bank instead of a larger bank with more capacity, or multiple banks, or working directly with a payments processor?
It smells an awful lot like pork to me. MetaBank is a small midwestern bank with headquarters in South Dakota and with locations in SD and Iowa. Lo and behold, John Thune used to be on the Board of Directors at MetaBank, and he's now one of the senior members of the Senate Finance Committee along with being the Senate Majority Whip. Coincidence? And Chuck Grassley is the chair of the committee and he's from Iowa.
It's going to cost me $7.50 to get a replacement card, $17 if I wanted it expedited, which I don't. Fees go straight to the bank. The cynic in me wonders if that's why these were sent out on the down low.
