Spare me the propaganda, here's the REAL map of deaths by county

I noticed a few things that seemed wrong about that map right away.

- The county I grew up in, Monroe NY, is colored yellow even though it has just 194 deaths.
- Los Angeles county is #7 in the country in deaths with 2145, but this map shows it green. Same for Oakland with 958.
- Nassau and Suffolk county in New York are colored red, but their deaths are lower than Cook county (Chicago) which is colored yellow
- Barnstable MA (Cape Cod) is yellow even though it only has 110
- Several counties in Eastern PA and Southern NJ are shown in yellow, but they only have a couple hundred deaths each. Same for Flint, MI.

Now that I'm back from work, I had a deeper look and it seems that somebody has been cherry picking counties to group into buckets of thirds, and not going in order by death counts. The counties they picked and the colors they used seem intentionally chosen to mislead people into thinking that Covid-19 deaths are highly localized and predominantly a regional problem.

If you're going to cherry pick in this manner, you could re-do the map to make any particular county any color you like. You could even make NYC an island of green in a sea of red. It's just blatant propaganda.

Now, if you want to see the real deal, go to this link and choose the "Deaths" tab at the bottom:

Looks a whole lot different, doesn't it?
