You have to be a masochist to tackle a puzzle with no artwork.
There's a series of puzzles with that name "World's Most Difficult Jigsaw Puzzle". They are 529-piece, double-sided puzzles with different sorts of artwork, and they are genuinely hard.
I was on an adventure tour of New Zealand 7 or 8 years ago and one night while looking for something to do after dinner, we spotted one of these puzzles on the shelf of the house we were staying at. Two in our group were very type A and as soon as they saw "World's Most Difficult" they couldn't resist. I reluctantly joined in, and the three of us didn't finish until about 1AM. It had one of the easier artworks too, I think it was the Airport edition.
They now have a Dalmatians version that is quite a bit harder.
And pretty much any double-sided puzzle is going to be hard.
