I'm simply trying to explain what the term actually means, which hasn't changed. Wet markets are not a Chinese peculiarity. Wet market is just an English term for fresh food market.Again, the problem is not wet markets, the problem is wild animal trade. As a result of Covid-19, the Chinese have banned the practice. Do they enforce it? I don't know. But I do know it is officially banned now.
I've never been to a market that sold wild animals, but when I visited China I saw many wet markets and they're not that different from our own open fish markets and farmers markets.
EDIT: I suppose I ought be clear here that I'm not trying to excuse the Chinese for allowing dangerous practices like selling wild animals for food. They should have banned it a long time ago. And as you know, there's a pretty good chance it caused the pandemic. What gets me wound up is when people criticize the Chinese for allowing the markets to re-open, with wild animal trade now prohibited. It's literally like criticizing them for opening grocery stores.
Seattle had the first significant outbreak in the US, and they kept Pike Place Market open the whole time. The bare handed fish throwing there is a bit more cavalier than I saw in Shanghai markets.
