WFH often comes with a productivity loss

My wife is currently working full time from home, and I'm close to 50/50. But neither of our companies intends to continue working this way. It's a temporary situation that will only last as long as schools remain closed and child care is limited. In the past, my company has tried several times to promote work from home arrangements to reduce office space needs, and they always wind it back after seeing the productivity loss. This is especially the case in my line of work (engineering) where everyone is adopting agile methods such as scrum, whose effectiveness depends on having teams sitting together.

I agree with you guys that most business travel is not really necessary. There's always been an element of boondoggle to it, and it's often considered to be one of the perks that helps attract people to certain positions. So I think it will come back, once everyone's bottom line is healthy again.

In the 1990s, we got email and then we got video teleconferencing. After that, web cams and then VPNs. So we'd had the basic tools necessary to limit travel for about 20 years now, but it took a pandemic to really make businesses cut back.
