I think it's a masterpiece

I wasn't a big follower of SNL back in the day, or now. For me, it's an exercise in patience to spend an hour watching for just a handful of laughs. And most of the SNL spin-offs are not that funny to me, they're generally just one comedic idea stretched to fill 90 minutes of screen time. I never liked John Belushi much either. And I don't even like musicals.

But man, the Blues Brothers is something else. The band is fantastic, and real. And the guest appearances, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, Pinetop Perkins, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles. And with few exceptions, they are well cast for their scenes and act their speaking parts well.

It just doesn't let up from beginning to end. It's not just one sketch stretched to fill a movie. It's non-stop gags, cameos, good music, dancing, and over the top stunts. And some of the gags are uncanny real. Like Bob's Country Bunker with the cafeteria tables and chicken wire - I've been to a couple places like that! The locations are all real, it's very well filmed, and directed with a lot of attention to detail.

On top of that, it's not ruined by studio interference, and it's free of out of place product placements, disco, punk, and other pop culture references that would fly over the head of modern viewers. So it holds up the best of all 1980s comedies IMHO.
