Then again, I haven't heard of any schools in this region conducting active shooter drills. My kids know that I own guns but have never seen them. They do see cops wearing them safely all the time, and occasionally soldiers.
If we were in a zoo and kids saw a person with a sidearm on his belt, my kids would probably assume it's a plain clothed LEO. If it was somehow obviously not a cop, e.g. a biker, my 4 year old would probably giggle and my 6 year old might ask why he brought it. I'd probably say he's just showing off, because she's too young to understand what a dick extension means.
I live in an open carry (NH) and yet it's rare to see. I think most zoos, museums, etc. refuse entry to anyone carrying a firearm anyway.
