When I think of mainstream media, it's the media companies and institutions that dominated the latter 20th century and were the predominantly trusted sources of news into the beginning of this one. Particularly the national networks and marquee papers and periodicals, and the media conglomerates they're now part of.
But another way to think about it is: whoever is consistently getting millions of eyeballs is by definition mainstream. Going by that thought, we should look at who gets the most views on YouTube, who has the most Facebook friends, and the most Twitter followers. Scary thought, actually.
