RE: BMW?

The biggest reason to register is if the replacement battery is not the same as the old one in either AH capacity or if one is AGM and the other standard lead acid.

The link was correct in that it does treat an aging battery differently. But it isn't a significant difference and it won't over charge the battery. What it may do is to hold off charging, which can be a problem if all you do is drive short distances.

They sell cigarette lighter combination volt meters and USB charger. I have some cars I don't drive much and these are handy to keep an eye on battery health. One other thing about some BMW models is the vampire current varies more than you would expect. It varies over time and the state the car was left in.

German cars tend to have cigarette lighters live with the car turned off. VW used to ship their cars with a small photovoltaic that sits on the dash and plugs into the cigarette lighter to keep the battery up while it is on the lot. Good idea if the car sits out.
