I actually agree with you that guns themselves are not the problem - in fact Michael Moore made a note in one of his films (Bowling for Columbine) where he noted that Canadians as a percentage had more guns than Americans. Per capita (in the Northwest Territories). So many nations have plenty of guns. So your question is critical:
> > So what's changed in that fifty years to cause people to lose respect for each other, lose hope, lose jobs, become dependent on the government, and lose sight of the value of family, and their values in general? < <
The reason people want to restrict guns is because they don't have the money and resources to tackle the underlying issue you just raised. You have all these angry and sad and mentally unstable people with easy access to mass murder weaponry. So the fastest and cheapest solution is to ban guns or ban some guns - it's a band aid on an amputated leg.
IF and I say IF because the IF requires a LOT of money you tackle mental health, depression, and generally creating a happier society you can probably have all the guns and a lot less gun deaths.
But then the left will say - hey let's introduce mental health facilities where people can get help. The Republicans all say - NO - I am not paying a tax for that. The left will say - hey let's start a community outreach program to take in people who are depressed they got fired after 20 years, or more marriage counselors - you know the folks who go nuts and shoot up the place they got fired or shoot their family because they can't afford psychologists to work out their problems - NO says the Republican - pick yourself up by yourself - screw you. The business owner who votes Republican and gets his ass shot by a disgruntled employee - well you only had yourselves to blame.
The reason this is a problem in the USA and NOT in those other countries (in the last 50 years) is because money is spent on preventative measures!
And you note the exact same thing - so why not look at countries in Europe with lots of hunters and guns (Canada and Australia) and then look at their education systems, their healthcare services, levels of science knowledge and their low levels of religiosity.
Single payer healthcare ( a social safety net) takes stress of people - not losing your job because your wife gets sick and you have to take a month off to look after her and your boss fires you. This stuff is a fluke and in other countries you won't get fired. You do not have the STRESS of always looking over your shoulder if you get sick.
Stress leads to worry which leads to helplessness which leads to depression which leads to Jack wanting bash your brains in at work. Take out the stress then the dominoes don't fall. Every other industrialized nation has universal health care and NONE of them have these problems in the US. Start there and see. And offer the current medical care system on top (two tiers like Canada) so the rich guys can still go to private clinics and hospitals. The rich get more choice and the poor and middle class still get the necessities. I wish all the mass shootings were killing millionaires because when the rich people get their asses shot they would be more motivated to do something. But if it's poor killing poor they cdon't care.
