RE: "I can probably defend myself against any weapon OTHER than a gun."

You seem very conscious of your potential to attempt to defend yourself against attacks, except for those with a gun, which is commendable. And yet you and your ilk would deny me the ability to attempt to do the same, including an attack with a gun.

I grew up in Buffalo NY, a city 60 miles (97 km) south of Toronto, as the crow flies. We had a rifle range in our school basement, with the guns secured in nothing more than a large, thin metal filing cabinet, with a simple padlock. Nobody, including students, teachers, and parents, ever gave guns in the school a second thought. Why do you think that was?

Fifty years later, and a 7 year old kid gets suspended for biting a Pop-Tart into the shape of a gun (link to story below).

So what's changed in that fifty years to cause people to lose respect for each other, lose hope, lose jobs, become dependent on the government, and lose sight of the value of family, and their values in general?
