RE: TROTD

The D&SNGRR people estimate that they carry about 200,000 passengers this year. We rode the train last Friday and the car we were in wasn't even half full allowing passengers to switch sides as the scenery changed. Their peak season starts next week and will continue through most of August. It is a bit pricey for tickets but it's one of those rides that you really ought to take at least once because it's such a cool experience. I'd suggest that anyone interested in the railroad check out their website for reservations before booking your hotel room.

Durango has become a tourist town that depends on the railroad. There are accommodations of all sorts and price ranges. Restaurants to suit any tastes have moved into town along with a couple of brewpubs and pot dispensaries. Durango has pretty much gone the way of any of Colorado's cool towns. Most of the long term residents have moved out to less expensive and quieter small towns. The waiters and waitresses, shop help, and other service persons live outside of town as well. It costs plenty of money to be a hipster in Durango. It's a great place to visit but I have no illusions about being able to afford to live there.
