What was old is new (or is that the other way around ?)
There was a huge opioid addiction after the civil War.
From a song by Michelle Shocked, "Shaking Hands (soldiers joy)"
I took a rifle ball in my shoulder
But my entire body filled with pain
I pleaded with them all at the hospital
Oh God, another shot of morphine !" & the last phrase,
"I took the biter pill
Tell the story on my grave, my soul they could not save
What the bullet would not kill, the needle will."
