For a one day visit I'd recommend Burlington. Don't get me wrong, Boston is still the "Hub of the Universe" in my book but one day isn't enough. Besides, trying to drive through that city as an out of towner is far worse than maddening, the streets aren't laid out in a grid pattern and follow no logical design at all. Parking is hard to find and the subway can be frustrating. OTOH, in Burlington you can park in front of City Hall, walk a block and be in a thriving downtown shopping district.
