Mobility is still a problem but getting better. The operation left me with the feeling that my left leg is now shorter than my right so you can imagine how that can play games with my mind. The PT office explained that it's due to the weakening of the muscles in my upper leg, between the hip joint and knee. The first part of the PT was to coax some cooperation between my brain and the muscles to fire on time and in cooperation.
Now the emphasis is on regaining strength in the quads and glutes along with opening up flexibility in the hip. All that appears to be intended to help me regain my ability to walk correctly. I have to admit that I never put much thought into the mechanics of walking or the flexibility I have in my healthy leg. I know I won't ever take those things for granted again. Much of this rehab process is also mental effort, changing the "I want to.." to "I can do!" because this is work. Fortunately, the therapist I work with recognizes my willingness to improve and keeps increasing the difficulty of the exercises fast enough to keep me grounded in reality.
I get around with a cane these days and can walk short distances but the feeling of a shortened leg hasn't gone away. So I'm making a very conscious effort to walk upright with and without the cane. The orthopedic surgeon said that I'd be ready to do without my cane by the date of my next appointment in early February and while I'm skeptical of that prediction, it seems like something to strive for.
As far as pain goes, I managed to stop taking the hydrocodone pills just before Christmas. I had to be off of them before the ortho would clear me to drive. I still take OTC ibuprofen as needed but not more than four in a day. There's nothing I can take to cure this impatience.
