The fentanyl just about wipes out all the pain in a very short time period, more than a heartbeat but less than 15 seconds. It's also noted for its short duration, an hour or less. The only demerol I remember taking was in a pill form and took a while to take effect but lasted three to four hours.
While I was in the ER, they administered a morphine injection and that was way different from the fentanyl. The morphine hit like a ton of bricks, a kind of "Whoooomp! Here I am!", that felt like it was pushing the air out of my chest. I thought it was impressive and I hope I never need another shot.
