The Hipster Report

First, let me say that the term hipster is one I got from a relative who had a hip replacement as well. John needed his elective procedure after years of playing competitive "friendly" soccer up to the onset of middle age.

So anyways, as I posted a couple of months ago, I needed a hip replacement after a hard fall onto pavement. The fracture line ran across the thickest part at the top of the femur. I got the titanium with ceramic surface model as a lifetime consolation prize. I'm now going to physical therapy twice a week and making progress but some days it seems like I'm only halfway through. I should ask because that may just be where I'm at.

Thank goodness for health care insurance and Medicare or I would either have had a heart attack or be contemplating bankruptcy. The first bill I got was for the ambulance ride to the hospital which was some 24 miles away. The EMTs were very good and I must say that the fentanyl injections for the pain were interesting but not worth repeating. If you've ever had one administered, you know what I'm talking about. Cost for the ride and entertainment was just over $900. I haven't gotten the bill for the ER experience before being admitted but one ER doctor, x-rays and radiologist to read them, two nurses, the room, and more medications to keep me comfortably numb won't be complimentary. I'll probably be charged for the disposal of the jeans they had to cut off.

A partial bill for the stay after admission to discharge came in yesterday and nearly knocked me ass over tea kettle, $59,000 and change. The orthopedic surgeon and anesthesiologist bills aren't part of that $59K as far as I can tell. I happened to look at the costs for my PT sessions and they're $183 for a one hour session. I suspect that by the time all the bills have come in, the total could very well be close to $100,000. Damn, that's a lot of money.

Once is enough.
