Well I'm in the South too (New Orleans). Why else would I have been buying a battery for a riding mower in January.
I would have thought that cold would be worse for a battery than heat. I know my dad, when he lived in Ohio used to park his car in the garage in the winter so that it would start. He parked in the driveway in summer. Some people removed their battery each night and reinstalled it in the morning. What a pain. Maybe it's the strain of turning an engine over with near frozen oil rather than the cold battery. I'm no expert, but most chemical reactions perform better at normal or elevated temps.
