What you described is what she has at her Fortress of Solitude. Old, quite old. There is available power on the furnace in the basement, and I can run a wire down from the thermostat mounting location to it. In fact, that is exactly what has to be done. I looked at putting a transformer near the thermostat upstairs on the main floor, but no 120 volt AC nearby without having to punch holes in plaster/lath. Next trip up there I'll probably have to deal with it.
