A good tight end is a weapon. When the Saints had Jimmy Graham, most teams didn't have an answer for him. He was way bigger and stronger than corners and could out jump them. Linebackers couldn't run with him. Seattle was the only team that seemed to keep him in check. They harassed him on every play and got away with a lot of contact beyond 5 yards and missed interference calls. I couldn't believe the Saints let him go. We've had tight ends since, but not of the same caliber.
Every team needs a giant that can run and catch the ball. It might not get you the yardage that the WRs get you, but they can move the chains on third down, and they can do good things in the red zone.
