You were both lucky. I was the last year before the lottery. I needed another semester to complete 8 hours to graduate. I went home to talk to this bitch on the draft board and asked her for one semester. I had to talk to her through a screen door. She didn't invite me in. She told me she had a quota to fill. "You're getting drafted in September". I told her that in that case, I would join the Army Reserve. She laughed at me and told me there was a line down the street to get into the reserves.
It so happened that my fiancé's dad was a WWII vet with some drinking buddies at the VFW in the reserves. I went to basic, AIT and back to school. I spent the next 6 years in an artillary unit blowing out too much of my hearing. Still, it beat Nam. I always wondered. Who the guy was to filled my quota spot. It was a small town. I probably would have known him. I hope he got through in one piece.
