Okay, change every family to some families should have a truck.

I have had 3 SUVs all with roof racks (primarily for boats). I did a lot of canoe camping and backpacking with my wife and boys. You may have missed something there IMO.

I could put the roof rack on these and haul lumber etc. Some things that needed hauling would fit in the SUV, some wouldnt. The truck is just easier. I never haul any gravel or dirt in my truck that isn't bagged. I did once and that was enough. They dropped a load of wet river sand on my bed, half on my cab and hood. It was a bear to clean up. I had plastic down in the bed, but didn't expect sand on the cab and hood.

You can't get an 8x4 sheet of plywood into most SUVs- maybe a Suburban? A refrigerator has to be hauled upright. SUVs need not apply. There are a lot of things a truck works for that a van or SUV doesn't, but I realize that many people don't have those needs or are happy to pay someone else to do what they need. Like I said, I have had a mix of sports cars, SUVs and trucks. I live across the street from a mother, her daughter, and the daughter's son. They have and can afford to have all of their problems taken care of by paying others. That is a valid solution.

I realize that many people don't do any DIY home projects, repairs or wood building projects. They will do fine without any hauling capabilities. You can pay people to haul stuff for you. On the other hand don't be one of these people and ask me to borrow my truck or move something for you. To each his own.
