Independent bookstores seem to be doing better than, say, 10 years ago.
The specialized ones (such as Borderlands) know their clientele and most
of the others have been around long enough to know what they are doing
to navigate around the online onslaught.
But many are still at the mercy of greedy landlords (such as Albatross Books)
who have been in the same location for about 40 years. They tried and failed with
a 2nd shop, but had stayed steady with the one until the landlord recently decided
to give them the boot.
There are plenty of people that still want to shop a good book store, but it's
a dicey business.
