The last project I worked on was in Africa. It cost thousands of dollars to make a field trip. I made one trip a year for three years. My boss made one trip. We needed in formation on the project progress and they needed lots of help from us. We ironed a lot of issues out during our weekly teleconference.
You can take care of a lot with emails, but some things are easier to explain in a verbal conversation.
I agree that some businesses have meeting to excess and cut into the time people have to actually accomplish things. Like everything, moderation is a good thing.
