When I was in my 50s, I backpacked in Colorado and Montana. We regularly did 8-10 miles with a 2000-3000' elevation gain with 45 lbs. on my back.
I worked until I was 68 1/2. I didn't really retire voluntarily. I worked 45 years in oil and gas, and as everyone high fives at the gas pump now days, there are few jobs to be had. I basically got laid off at the end of a completed project when we didn't have any new projects to manage. After a few months I realized that I was retired.
I spent about the last 5 years of my working life sitting behind a desk, talking on phone, and staring at a computer screen. I started walking in a nearby park. I couldn't make a half mile without my lower back killing me. The park has benches, so I would take a break and continue. I have stenosis in my lower back.
Somehow, surprisingly, I got to where I could do a mile without a back break, then a mile and a half and on and on. Around the 6 month point, I could do 5 miles pain free.
I'm pretty sure I will never back pack again. I think that the added weight would probably do me in. Getting old isn't for wimps.
