In many states, she would be awarded 50% of everything the two of you had accumulated in the time you were together even if she never worked and no matter what she did. That would include half of the house and any retirement funds. Ask me how I know.You got away cheap. I went through it once, luckily early in life. Three years married to her cost me around 50 grand. I still remember thinking it was worth it to have her the hell out of my life.
Happily remarried to the love of my life going on 35 years. Marriage is a serious decision. You need to get it right and the truth is that it might be partly luck. I think the important thing is that they have a good heart.
