We have a female dog who is freaked out by fireworks and thunderstorms. We are keeping a little female dog for my brother-in-law who is out of the country. She is also sensitive to thunder and fireworks. She hasn't left my lap for hours.
My wife and I are not concerned with thunder or fireworks. They are not picking up anything from us.
