It sounds like he did everything right. I used to backpack a lot, and spending the night in grizzly country always caused me to sleep lightly. It's different being on the lower end of the food chain.

My wife and I were camping once 8 miles from the trail head and woke up to hear a bear snuffling two feet from our tent. She whispered that she wanted to see. I whispered to be quiet. The bear moved on thankfully. No doubt, sticking her head out of the tent to see, could have been fatal.
