Growing up, I had a friend who was a little better off than my family. His dad owned a lumber company and his mom was a teacher. They had a maid/cook who was black. The kid told a story that he picked up the phone to make a call, but the maid was on the line talking to one of her friends. He listened in for a moment and heard her say that sometimes she "got so mad at white folks that she spit in the peas". At that point, I was glad that we didn't have a maid/cook and that my mom prepared our food. I think the maid/cook had to go back to hoeing cotton.
