Is our term for the misinformation provided by Internet "experts" who proffer conspiracy theory and other misinformation. We see patients every week who come in with three lines of Internet content in their heads who then proceed to tell us how they should be treated :-(

I am intimately involved in crafting my institutions response to a patient with Ebola. Influenza is incredibly more contagious than Ebola but the news media have hyped up a frenzy that plays right into the hands of the conspiracy theorists and hypermedicine gurus.

American medicine invented hospital infection control in the seventies.
American medicine has since progressed so far beyond the rest of the world in infection control practices such that we are singularly positioned to deal with such an infection. Our community hospitals deal with tuberculosis (much more contagious than Ebola) every month without it escaping to the community or infecting the staff.

So, the various officials trying to calm the public are doing battle with these "experts" who proffer only hysteria. The news media also are to blame by their propensity to exaggerate information in order to create the sensation that sells newspapers and airtime.

Lastly, the CDC's credibility has been somewhat tarnished of late by the lapses in safety at the mother ship in Atlanta Nevertheless their message is correct and to be believed.

But, it is true that a successful parasite does not kill it's host. For this reason, Ebola will eventually subside

I would be scared shitless if I got Ebola but I am not afraid to be one of the healthcare workers who will be going into the room of an Ebola patient should we get one.
