I've been running my xp pro 24/7 since 2007. When I got it, Vista was available, but I passed and got the old OS. And it has been perfect for my needs.
So I am overdue for a new computer, but I'm not buying the Microsoft scare tactics. But I am still nervous.
I helped a friend fight a rootkit and it was an ugly mess. Eventually we had to reinstall the OS to actually get rid of it. If something like that got established, it would be the end of the computer at this point.
I'm using Firefox with noscript addon. I use the common sense approach of never installing any executable unless it I trust it 100%. And I haven't had any problems in years. And despite the nervous "end of support", I have a gut feeling that nothing bad is going to happen.
