mike...you cannot diagnose asthma with just an episode of wheezing which may have been simply a single adverse inflammatory reaction to an allergen...anyone can have an episode of wheezing..asthma is diagnosed with what is called a methacholine challenge test which is done through a pulmonologists office..usually at a hospital...it is a breathing test where one is administered .after first undergoing a breathing test to establish a normal....medication and then retaking the test to see to what % the results are worse the the first...if the results are worse by 20% or more then you are judged to have a (+) methacholine challenge and will then ..more then likely ..be an asthmatic...do not let your pcp put down 'asthma' on your diagnostic records before having the definitive test...this may affect your insurance rates....good luck
