...have you had an mri of the shoulder yet..?..your post did not suggest that you have..the orthopedic surgeon can not accurately tell if you do have a rotator cuff tear ....vs a labral tear..without doing an mri...certainly if you cannot actively abduct the shoulder or externally rotate it you may have a rotator cuff tear but you do need an mri first...surgery is not the only answer for small tears as they sometimes do well with rest and PT..but if this is your dominant arm and the arm you use in your profession and you are fairly young then you may need the arthroscopic surgery...make sure ..if you do get the surgery that the orthopedist has done alot of these and that is record would indicate he is well versed with the intricacies of the operation.
