I go back farther than you....

The first real stereo we had--Miracord 10H changer, Bogen tube receiver (if you wanted FM stereo, you had to buy an add-on multiplex unit) and a pair of 15" coaxials (actually, only one was a co-ax; the other had a whizzer cone).
But being a kid with a serious music jones, I wanted to build my own stereo. The old Lafayette catalog was dog-eared and beat from the hours I spent leafing through it. Never mind that I didn't have a red cent to my name.
I remember listening to "Stairway to Heaven" at Wander Sales appliance and furniture store in McKeesport. Pioneer SX-1010 receiver and Bose 501s. I thought it sounded awesome until I heard one of the Sheffield D2D records at Opus One--Transcriptors Skeleton w/Vestigal arm, Magneplanars. Don't remember the cart, the electronics, or the model number on the Maggie, but that moment was an epiphany. I had no idea was true quality sound reproduction what like until that day.
In 1976, I paid $30.00 for a Dynaco ST-70/PAS combo. They were both clean and functional. Can you imagine what they would sell for now on eBay?
The 1970's were my audio years. Besides the Dyna stuff, I had: Advent 300 receiver, Nikko 2010 receiver, Stax "earspeakers," Kenwood integrated amp, POS Rotel TT with Transcriptors Vestigal arm, a whole raft of carts, Advent Largers (bought in 1976 and still my main speaker system), Advent 3s, several different sets of Sennheiser headphones.
My brother loved the silver look Japanese stuff, and he had one of the early Technics SL-1200 TTs
The 1980s were the Dark Ages for me in a lot of different ways besides audio.
But I never gave up on this stuff and I'm still heavily into it today. In fact, I'm going to finish upgrading my TT to ease the nervousness over the Super Duper Bowl today...
