I guess you know you are getting old when you can
remember some of the classic pieces of audio
equipment that some people collect and still
use. The audio bug bit me early on. Growing
up the son of a coal miner I did not have any
disposable income to spend on audio equipment.
I can remember going into the old Lafayette??
stores and looking at equipment when my Dad was
looking for parts to rebuild an old turntable.
I remember going into my first high-end store
around when I was about 14 and drooling over the
equipment. The reason I write this soppy post
is I hope some of you can help me with details
of my clouded memories. I remember all of the
SILVER japanese receivers and int amps quite
well from Pioneer, Sansui, Sanyo, Kenwood and
others. But I vaguely remember some hi-end
stuff that I cannot place models on. I remember
some really big Infinity?? speakers that an array of
Emit?? tweeters that ran from the top to the bottom??
Remember those?? I also remember these weird pyramid
shaped speakers...maybe Dahlquist..not sure?? And I
also remember what was called the System 1(I think)
by Nakamichi?? A full rack of electronics. All of this
stuff sounded GREAT to me and would surely give a
budding audio-nut a CHUBBIE!! I can also remember
around '79 seeing my Macintosh system and a
set of Bozak speakers with these black rubber looking
woofers. Remember these?? I also remember this HUGE
SANSUI receiver that had to be the biggest one I had
ever seen as well as some of the CQ-4 channel Panasonic??
receivers. Lastly I remember well my SAE 2200 power
amp I bought from a POT HEAD who toasted the
output transistors at a party. A complete
output stage rebuild later I was ROCKIN!!! Being
a fool, idiot, numbskull(pick one) I sold it and bought my
first HT receiver years ago....DOH!!!! I still own my 1st
decent set of speakers, the EV Interface 1s. I refurbed
them and gave them to my son. Everytime I listen to
them it brings back some great memories. Sorry for
being long-winded....but do you remember any of the
stuff I mentioned?? My memory is fading on some of this
stuff..Bill
