Yes, we know that plenty of rural areas and also some suburban areas don't have adequate public transportation. We know gas prices have gone up considerably. We know that for many areas of the country cars are a necessity.Where I live - basically a Jersey suburb of NYC - public transportation is a necessity. All the tunnels/bridges into the city from any direction are ridiculously congested and toll prices are high (Lincoln/Holland tunnels and GW Bridge are $16). Every major city and plenty of smaller cities need more/better public transportation, not more cars. Around here and no doubt in lots of other cities there literally is no real estate left to build more roads/highways, not to mention the parking hassles and absurd traffic once in the cities.
Isn't it obvious to you that the main population centers are cities. NYC has more people than Utah, Montana, Indiana combined. Philly has about the same population as N. & S. Dakota combined. Chicago has almost as many people as the entire state of Arkansas. LA has a greater population than the entire state of Kansas, etc., etc.
So what solutions do you offer? Seems blatantly obvious to me that we need a massive upgrading of mass transit and more of it. If you have a suggestion as to how to lower gas prices right now what is it?
