So I've seen a lot of tiny house videos and I'm a fan of this trend. As John said, they ought to make great granny flats. I think they make a lot more sense than remodeling a larger home to carve out an in-law apartment. They're also a great option for a seasonal residence, a vacation home, hunting cabin, etc.

Beyond that, tiny homes have the potential to increase housing density in existing suburbs and help solve the lack of affordable housing problem that most major metropolitan areas face. But I don't think the potential will ever be realized because the towns best suited for it are usually the ones most opposed to allowing rental properties in neighborhoods zoned for single-family dwellings.

It's interesting you mentioned a fifth wheel. My kids are really keen to get a travel trailer because it would take a lot of the effort out of camping and thus we'd do it more often than twice a year. So we've been looking at them, and I don't think they're all rubbish. Obviously, towing requirements are a big consideration, so most are built light. But otherwise, you get what you pay for. You can buy something cheap if you're only going to use it for summer getaways. If you're going to be on the road a lot, you can buy a better chassis. Some can take some off-roading. If you're going to use it in cold weather, you can find companies who make them better insulated. Some are made to be more off-grid friendly than others. There's a lot of variety.

We probably won't end up buying one though. I don't want a half-ton pickup or a full-sized body on frame SUV as my daily driver and I don't want to buy and maintain a truck just for towing the camper.
