...don't believe all of that alarmist BS. Why do you think there are product labels and material safety data sheets for EVERYTHING. If you use any product (even something "simple" like dish soap or laundry detergent) improperly, you can get sick and/or die.Pesticides and pharmaceuticals are rigorously tested and highly regulated. Sure--those adverse effects were seen in testing at very high levels and via various routes of exposure. That's how the use rates and recommended precautions are established for the label. Read the label and use accordingly.
The average person has no idea what the testing and regulatory processes involve in getting these products to the market--especially for those that may end-up in agricultural (food) use applications are. I was involved in those processes for decades.
2,4-D is my personal favorite herbicide for use around my property--followed by glyphosate. Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in global agriculture.
Pesticides that are used on agricultural crops (food) are regulated as indirect food additives--just like any food-coloring or flavoring directly added to every food in your pantry or fridge. In fact, they are more thoroughly evaluated, because more parameters are involved--manufacturing/transport safety, applicator safety, environmental impact, and acceptable content in consumed foods (both raw and processed).
Every year, there is a list of the most-contaminated produce you can buy--and it is total BS. "There are 26 pesticides used on celery"--for example. Yes, there are 26 pesticides APPROVED for use on celery--not every stalk of celery contains 26 pesticides. There are just 26 to choose from, depending on your needs/growing conditions.
Farmers use the absolute minimum amount of pesticides that they can. This stuff is expensive, so every "extra" application is money straight out of their pocket. If you over-use something, residues show up in the products (which are regulated and tested for), and the crop is destroyed--total loss.
The most pesticide-laden environments on the planet are golf courses. "Ornamental" use-rates (non-food) are much higher than agricultural (food) use rates, and country-club members don't care about pissing-away money for "extra" applications--as long as those greens are "green" and "perfect"--environment be damned.
Believe what you want, but go on-line and look at the MSDSs available for any typical household product, and look at the "hazards" and "warnings". Tabasco sauce is a "food-grade poison"--it is a severe skin and eye irritant, corrosive, and potential inhalation hazard (among other things). You should see the DOT haz-mat placards on a 35,000 gal rail-car of the stuff. I have. It gets transported from manufacturer to bottling via rail. That little 2 oz bottle that you'll use on a dozen wings ain't shit, but if that rail-car crashes and spills 35,000 gallons (especially if it gets into a waterway) is hazardous material. Jim Beam was fined $600,000 for a bourbon spill that caused a major fish-kill after a warehouse fire. A funny side note about that one, was that some local wells were also contaminated, and people had bourbon coming out of their taps--BONUS!
"And today is for sale and it's all you can afford. Buy your own admission. The whole things got you bored. Well the Lord chooses the good ones, and the bad ones use the Lord"--a very dear friend for decades Michael Stanley (Gee)--RIP
