To Dave's point on intimidation.
The Chinese are no more intimidated then they were in the 50's during the Korean War and the North Vietnamese were in the 60's.
The US, is in their backyard - so if even if a few Chinese destroyers and bases get hammered - the effect on the Chinese people is going to be less dramatic, then if say a Chinese response consists of missile taking down a US aircraft carrier or Anderson AFB getting blasted to rubble.
