It did cross my mind that the mainland Chinese might like to have unfettered access. . .

. . . to TSMC - especially right now. Of course, that's just speculation.

Otherwise. . . I think that the US military Presence near Chinese territory exists for more than "intelligence and surveillance operations". There's a whole intimidation factor at work there, as well as an attempt to see if we can get China to "pick a fight" with us - an insane strategy considering that China is a nuclear armed power, although not nearly to the extent that we are. Moreover, they now have Russia on their side in what one Chinese communication said was was "more than an alliance".
