I agree

I'm for responsible gun ownership.

That said if AB pointed that gun at someone and pulled the trigger he should be criminally liable. And IMO it doesn't matter much that someone told him it wasn't loaded - obviously his failure to insure the gun he was going to fire wasn't loaded led to death and injury.

Was he playfully shooting at people with a gun he thought contained blanks? We need more info though in order to determine his degree of culpability as well as a better understanding of the law where this happened to determine what he should be charged with. Shame on any jurisdiction that would give him a pass on this.

And those who prepared the gun and those who passed the gun to him should be at even great risk of having some criminal action taking against them.

I have a real hard time understanding why we have to tolerate such negligence and irresponsibility just because we have a 2nd amendment. Because of that we should have stricter standards.
