...where my parents live is prime Marcellus shale territory. Over the last decade or so the geologists (and corporate lawyers) have been knocking on/down doors with mineral rights/drilling rights contracts. But the price of natural gas is so low, all they do is secure the rights, drill a few "test wells", cap them, and leave--but, trust me, they know damned-well what "reserves" they are holding.
The only wells that are truly "drying-up" are the ones extracting water--and that's going to bite us in the ass way before the gas pumps run dry.
The problem with "alternate energy" sources is (and always has been) COST. If it were cheaper and/or more efficient, we'd have been there long ago. I have solar panels and now even an EV (that I plug into my coal-fired outlet to charge)--and I thank you all for subsidizing my life. If it weren't for the tax credits/incentives, neither would be worth the investment.
Nuclear power is DEAD (in the US)--the public is just poisoned against it. After the incident at Three Mile Island, and the disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima, it's OVER. Rather than continue to develop modern and safer nuclear power sources, we (as a country) decided to cease further progress. We even cancelled/terminated construction of new facilities (some that were already in-progress). Instead, we are "running-out" the useful life-spans of existing nuclear facilities (that are ancient, and based on ancient technology), and de-commissioning them. We can do "better" now, but apparently not even trying.
"And today is for sale and it's all you can afford. Buy your own admission. The whole things got you bored. Well the Lord chooses the good ones, and the bad ones use the Lord"--a very dear friend for decades Michael Stanley (Gee)--RIP
