bison leather

Clicked over an saw the use of bison leather. Thought some might be interested that a pair of buffalo leather hoses is considered the secret weapon of the firemen out of Benicia, Ca. when they attend fireman competitions.

They are on the back of the frisco bay, and get the old frisco fire equipment to use in the less demanding rural fires. They have engraved trophy silver fire trumpets from 4th of July competitions from the 1800's. among other displays.

They have an antique Philadelphia hand pumped fire engine they use for competitions. the original buffalo hoses draw water to the pump and are light and don't collapse under suction , unlike the replacement hoses other teams are forced to use.

The Smithsonian has a standing offer to buy the hoses, as they are in much better shape than what they display on the same type of pumper , but the firemen don't want to give up such a significant competitive advantage. I suspect they might also have an issue with giving the preservation to someone else, since they are the only guys to have preserved a working set of hoses. They also have an old and impressively muscular dodge power wagon that looks like it just came out of the box, now display only.

They have a nice little museum, but no funds, so the collection can only be visited on firemens day.
Just a small town, was the capitol of california for a couple of weeks, with the claim to fame being that Jack London used to live there and raid the local crab traps at night. Some say his Alaska journey was prompted by a need to escape the local law and objections to his night time boating activities.
