In fact, I'm not even against a military draft. I think it would force policy makers to reign in our overly-aggressive foreign policy.
Also, we need a leveling device. We need to find a way to throw people into situations and get them working together, give them a shared experience, give them something in common with everybody else. That used to be public schools, but too damned many parents won't send their kids anymore, don't want their kids being exposed to any ideas they, the parents, disagree with. Dunno, I thought that was the whole purpose of education.
I just don't see how universal service would fly here. Americans have become too self-centered over the last 40 years or so.
