I think what he had was the fear of having to work on it himself.

He was always happy to teach me how to fix my cars, but he was getting to the point where he didn't want to work on his own cars anymore and I don't think he was into the joy of synchronizing carburetors.
The irony was, he ended up working on that damned Caprice anyway. I remember when the fuel pump failed. What should have been an easy replacement took two days because the cheap shit aftermarket pumps sold at the nearest parts store didn't line up correctly and we kept stripping out the threads where the fuel line fed into the pump.
