Let's have some fun with this thread. Maybe we can learn from each other (fat chance, right?). Let me start with a couple questions.
What is this word you use: 'playbook'? According to Google, it's a book containing a sports team's strategies and plays, especially in football.
So you think global politics is just like team sports? With the sports metaphor mapping well into the world of global politics? Opposing teams. Everybody on one side or another. Fighting over territory. Scoring wins, suffering losses. Yay team!
And you be rooting in support of the Kazahk govt and against the protesters, right?
Me? Nowhere in my post did I takes sides. I just stated what's happening. Russia has legitimate interests in the region. Many Russians live in Kazakhstan, Russian is commonly spoken there, and the economic ties to Russia are extensive. The people that live in Kazakhstan also have extensive and legitimate interests, which many are voicing through protest.
But there is a third party here, which you seem to be overlooking. The Kazakh govt has questionable legitimacy. Citizens live in strained economic circumstances. There is major corruption and unaccountable wealth amongst govt elite. And the govt has brutally suppressed all dissident opposition. Chris, do you actually favor the regime of president Tokayev?
At least you are right about one thing. Oil! It's a major strategic resource of Kazakhstan.
And don't forget about uranium! Kazakhstan is the world's leading producer of uranium. That's reason enough for major world powers to seek influence and control over this region.
Complex stuff going on in Kazakhstan. Maybe you better check RT. Get informed! Before you blab out a reply!
