Inmate Central, where civil and family-friendly discourse about off-audio topics (other than religion and politics) is welcome.

There are looney extremists on all sides. And not all news media is rotten.

I think it's true that partisan political rhetoric effectively propels nut-jobs to acts of political violence. But from what sources do these nut-jobs acquire their crazed politics? I don't think it's from traditional 'main stream media'.

I concur with you that main stream news media does lean left, and that includes traditional big city newspaper publications like the NYT, WaPo, LATimes, Boston Globe, etc. But they do not engage in open political warfare like you allege. Partisan? To some extent, yes. But advocating open hatred towards a political opposition? That's just not true. Major city newspapers strive for accuracy, verify the facts of their stories, publish corrections, and avoid unsubstantiated rumors or speculation. They run opinion columns too, but even these have to comply with journalistic standards. Newspapers seriously risk reputation and lawsuits if they run bogus stories or engage in defamation.

Big city newspapers are the the most deeply rooted sources of news that our country has, and their journalistic standards are largely intact. Television journalism has more bias, and is somewhat of a better target for your criticism. But the real problem in our media landscape? That should be obvious. Do you think social media has had any impact? It's the elephant in the room. It's a newcomer to the media landscape, has already had a huge impact on global populations, is unregulated by law, lacks any standards of journalism, and portions of it are an open cesspool, where nut-jobs can proliferate.

It's difficult to speculate about what goes on in the mind of an assassin. Or figure out from which sources he obtained his political views. But we do know which end of the media landscape is the most toxic. It's extremist social media sites which most openly promote political violence, not mainstream news media.

Figuring out how to fix or regulate social media may be the real problem we have to confront.
