The shooter was a registered Republican.
Remember Arthur Bremer? He wanted to shoot Nixon but couldn't get close enough, so he shot George Wallace instead. No particular ideological axe to grind, he just wanted to shoot somebody famous.
John Hinckley shot Reagan in order to impress Jodie Foster.
Charles Guiteau killed Garfield because he thought he had been promised a cabinet position (which was pure fantasy).
The right wing went ballistic when JFK was elected. Flags were flown upside down throughout the South, a retired army general was calling for armed insurrection. But it was a lefty that killed Kennedy.
The US has higher rates of mental illness than any of the other 20 countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. We're a nutcase breeding ground par excellence . For all we know, the guy pulled the trigger because his cat told him to do it.
It would be wiser to wait before making any quantum leaps about motivation.
