RE: many new cars use a chrome look plastic on the wheels.

I am familiar with the process, my brother used a similar process in his optical business that had the only optical mirror plating in Arizona.

While I appreciate any attempt to advance the general knowledge, I did look into doing business with Detroit wheel and tire, simply because not to many places on the web advertise such a service, they are very far away from my location in So Cal, ground zero for car whatever you want, so were not my preferred choice.

but as of a couple of months ago, and only from what I heard from shops that had sent them work, the results weren't comparable to OEM. I wasn't super particular about a wavy finish, but there were also problems with actually getting the work done, and one of my wheels was pretty rough, under the lug nut cover.

I was kind of torn between tracking down some actual magnesium wheels that were a factory option for the car, but polished aluminum had so many advantages and weighed practically the same, might have been lighter, there were some conflicting weight specifications reported over the years for my old car.

I was mostly concerned about getting the correct spoke detail once I decided to go OEM, since I didn't want to spend the money and get the looks almost the same but for the wrong year wheel.

Luckily the automobile driving museum near me had a corvette show and a couple of the show cars there had the correct polished wheels, so I could check beyond just web information.
