I think most here would agree I'm a lefty...

But I'm a lefty in an older, more rational tradition. The fervent identity politics of today leaves me cold. Leaving civil union to the state and marriage to religions would have been fine with me. But you've just gotta know that this would never work in the U.S.: it would break down at the state level and create an even bigger mess where civil unions or marriages under some religions in some states would be recognized, others not. So disambiguating the word gains you nothing.
